My very first experience with baking was when I was around five years old. I was given an Easy Bake oven for Christmas – what fun I had with that! This is what piqued my interest, so my mother bought an Aunt Jemima coffeecake mix, I am showing my age with these old time favorites. I put the milk and eggs into the mix bag and squished and smushed away.
The spark was ignited and my passion for baking inflated like a well-risen yeast bread.
I started to experiment with recipes that I had unearthed from baking books from the library. I enjoyed adding or tweaking ingredients to enhance the flavor.
To further my knowledge I went to a pastry arts academy. I learned the science behind baking and why you must measure ingredients, unlike cooking.
I was a Pastry Chef at Treesdale Golf & Country Club – what a superb learning experience! I worked under a wonderful chef, Bob Malone, he gave me the freedom to make whatever desserts that I wanted to create. I continued to go to the local library and search for old and new recipes to add to my repertoire.
I opened a bakery is Aspinwall, PA after I had left Treesdale. It was a bakery/café called Artsy Tartsy. My sister and I combined her love of painting furniture with my love of baking. What a grand time we had!
I am now starting to bake for individuals out of my home in Sharpsburg, whether you would like a tart, torte, deep dish pie, celebration cake or a dessert buffet, I will deliver to your sweet tooth need. I truly believe in “scratch” baking, contrary to grocery stores. I use real butter and the finest of ingredients. The taste says it all, if you are going to indulge, then it should be top quality not processed baked goods.
